I am just starting this caregiver "gig." My husband and I moved from Florida to Northeastern Ohio to live with my mother in the house I grew up in this past August. I am one of five children and because my husband was unemployed, we were the only ones who could disrupt our lives and do this. In some ways it has been good, I am closer to famiy then I have been in 23 years. I am back at my home church which I love and feeds me spiritually. My mother would not have made the move to anywhere very well. Her ability to function really relies on her being in a place that she is comfortable and familiar with. We, the sibs, agreed that keeping her in her house was going to be the best way to keep her "with us" as long as possible. As it is she wanders and is totally lost sometimes, but you can almost see the light come on when she touches a certain piece of furniture or sees birds in a favorite tree outside. She also has an aging dog and a move would not have worked for her either. I really didn't know what to expect, and I found a therapist as soon as I moved back, but the anxiety about her and her stuff sort of snuck up on me. We are trying to make "us time" whenever we can and my sibs have been great about coming and helping out, but they don't live here and they don't know what it is like day in and day out. Sigh. Sorry to go on and on. I will enjoy reading what you write. Thanks for the blog.

Hi Steve,
You're right--caregivers have certainly banked their 10,000 hours. Gladwell's other book, "Blink" is another great book for caregivers--to go with your intiution, your gut when making caregiving decisions. We think they'e instantaneous, but in truth, our gut reactions are based on those 10,000 hours of attentive care. We can trust ourselves--a message we need to hear more.
Thanks for stopping by--
